Work Party at Larry’s Garage (Aug. 3rd, 2013)

This work party was memorable because it was one of the few times that both of Larry and Lorna’s grandsons were working on a common project at Larry’s Garage.  Cole, the older of the two boys, was visiting with his dad (Luke) from Missouri and Derek, was visiting from Arizona.  They were working on Cole’s 1927 touring car project.  The first task was to disconnect and lift a roadster body off a 1926 donor chassis.  The boys also dismantled portions of the engine/transmission to salvage parts to use on a 1927 engine that Cole had selected out of Larry’s stock of parts.  Larry was also working on merging the parts from two rear axles to create a single straight Rucksell axle for Cole’s touring.

Kirk and Vern Willan continued respoking the wheels on Kirk’s 1924 coupe “Buster”.  For safety, Kirk decided to replace all of the spokes on the car, especially in light of the recent well publicized fatal accident attributable to spoke failure on a Zion National Park tour.  This approach will give Kirk and Susan confidence in their 90 year old wheels!

Paul and Marilyn Duncan were disassembling their very original 1920 touring top bows from their top irons with the goal of replacing the bows with sound wood.  They will change some of the hardware, such as clips and straps, but will keep the original hardware for historical reference.  Paul was also installing a new speedometer gear on his right front wheel.  Marilyn was media blasting an instrument panel they found for their touring car.

Mark was wire brushing and media blasting transmission bands and inspection plate parts for his 1925 touring car project and was also testing the car’s horn.  Unfortunately, the horn didn’t work, so grinding the rivets holding the horn together was in order.  The horn project wasn’t finished and will have to wait for another work party.

Don Mitchell was working on smoothing out the brake handle cam that was sticking.  It required grinding and sanding it down so the bolt would slide across the cam more smoothly.

It was a great work day at Larry’s Garage and we were very happy to be working with Cole and Derek – such young and enthusiastic Model Ters!
