Work Party at Larry’s Garage (Feb. 24, 2018)

Photos and story by Mark Wing

There were four main projects at Larry’s Garage on this Saturday.  The most complex project was Mark Dominguez’s engine/transmission.  The transmission stopped working on the day of the club car show at the 2017 International Balloon Fiesta (October 8th, 2017).  On this work party day, Mark D. brought the engine and transmission from his touring car for disassembly, inspection, and cleaning.  After inspection of the parts, Mark’s transmission troubles were plainly visible with broken gear teeth, worn out triple gear bushings, and a badly damaged reverse drum.  Assisting on Mark’s project was Nick, son of Steve Langdon and grandson of Tin Lizzie member Larry Langdon.  This was Nick’s first visit to Larry’s Garage and we hope he becomes a regular participant!

Kirk Peterson was performing regular maintenance and a safety check on his 1927 Model T touring car in preparation of the Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida tour beginning March 3rd.  This Winter Tour is hosted by the Tin Lizzie Club of North Central Florida and both Kirk/Susan and Larry/Lorna were scheduled to be on the tour.

Mark Wing was media blasting front floor board supports, a top iron support, and cleaning up rear leaf springs for his 1925 Model T touring car.  The frame for the car is almost complete and attention has turned to the touring body.  Rust removal, tearing out old upholstery, tack strip restoration and some welding is being performed right now.  Luckily, the car was quite straight and the wood was in good condition.  Some new sheet metal has been ordered from Howell Sheet Metal to replace sections too badly damaged to be worth fixing. New seat springs had been ordered from Snyder’s and painting is (hopefully) not too far off in the future.

Marilyn and Paul Duncan were working on a period “STOP” light that was missing it’s red lens.  New red plastic with a radial pattern was cut and the Duncan’s were fine tuning the shape to fit correctly in the housing.  They used Dremel grinding tools to make the final adjustments.

Dave Merewether brought his 1926 Model T coupe for Larry’s opinion on how to repair cracks in his driver’s side front and rear fenders.  Removal and repairs will be performed at some future Work Party at Larry’s Garage.  Thanks Larry!
